Learn What You Need to Know to Pass the ABO & NCLE Exams!


Course Descriptions

Each 6-hour course is designed to walk attendees through every aspect of material covered on the ABO & NCLE exams.  The knowledge and understanding obtained through these courses will allow for successful completion of the ABO & NCLE exams by each attendee.

 

Networking Opportunities
The ABO & NCLE Review Courses will be held concurrently and in conjunction with the OAO Annual Conference & Exhibition October 14-15, 2017.  Review Course attendees will have the opportunity to meet more than 100 professional opticians and major optical company exhibitors at special networking events held throughout the weekend. This is an extraordinary opportunity for you to find out more about the opticianry profession and to discover new job openings.  You won’t want to miss these networking events!

NCLE Review Course Topics
Domain I           Ocular Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology of the eye as it pertains to contact lens wear.

Domain II          Refractive errors regarding ametropias and optical conditions related to contact lenses.

Domain III         Selecting and using the appropriate instruments and tests for evaluation and modification procedures.

Domain IV         Pre-fitting techniques will be discussed to evaluate the relationship between the corneal readings and the refractive error to identify the possible need for specialty materials and designs.  Domain V & VI  Diagnostic fitting and dispensing of both soft and rigid lenses, including aftercare, wearing schedules and patient hygiene.  These Domains also will include the use of instruments, tests  and evaluation procedures.

Domain VII        Follow-up and problem solving protocol as it relates to normal and abnormal symptoms.

Domain VIII       Legal aspects of contact lenses and tolerance standards utilized in contact lens fitting.

 

Time is allotted throughout both courses for questions.

Richard McCoy, Program Director, Opticianry Department, Reynolds Community College

Richard McCoy has been a Licensed Optician in the State of Florida for over 36 years and is board certified in contact lenses.  In addition, Richard is a licensed Optician in Virginia and is Board Certified in contact lenses as well. He is Program Director for the Opticianry Program at Reynolds Community College in Richmond, Virginia.  Previously, he was an instructor and site coordinator for the Opticianry program of Hillsborough Community College on the campus of Florida Southwestern State College in Fort Myers, Florida.  In addition, he was the program coordinator and an instructor for the Ophthalmology Assistant program at Florida Southwestern State College.  A published author, McCoy’s articles have appeared in 20/20 magazine, Vision Care Product News and Optical Laboratory Supplement.  He is formerly a chapter president and a state director for the Professional Opticians of Florida.  An accomplished speaker, Richard lectures across the United States on a variety of optical subjects and conducts numerous popular hands‐on training classes.


Robert Russo, President, National Federation of Opticianry Schools

Professor Russo is the past chairperson of Vision Care Technology and the anatomy and physiology and the ophthalmic business practices coordinator. He is certified by the American Board of Opticianry, the National Contact Lens Examiners, and the Opticians Association of America in Refractometry and is licensed in the states of New York and New Jersey. Professor Russo is currently the President of NFOS (National Federation of Opticianry Schools). He is a past Commissioner for the Commission on Opticianry Accreditation, a past member of the board of directors of the Contact Lens Society of New York State and past chapter president of New York State Society of Opticians.

In addition, Professor Russo has served on the faculty for the Opticians Association of America, Vision Expo East and West, EyeQuest and the ABO/NCLE Education Conference. He has published several articles on contact lenses and speaks frequently at the national and state levels.

Professor Russo received an Associate Degree in Ophthalmic Dispensing from New York City Community College, a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management from The City University of New York, and a Master of Arts degree in Education from New York University. Professor Russo was named “National Federation of Opticianry Schools “Educator of the Year” in 2009,  “Optician of the Year” by the New York State Society of Opticians in 2012 and received the National Academy of Opticianry’s Joseph Bruneni Memorial Education Achievement Award in 2015.

From the South:
Follow I-71 N to OH-750 E (Polaris Pkwy). Take exit 121 and turn right (east) on Polaris Pkwy. Continue to Pulsar Place. Turn right and continue on Pulsar Place. Quest Conference Center will be straight ahead just over pond.

From the East:
Follow I-270 W to I-71 N (Exit 26). Take exit 26 and continue on I-71 N to OH-750 E (Polaris Pkwy). Take exit 121 and turn right (east) on Polaris Pkwy. Continue to Pulsar Place. Turn right and continue on Pulsar Place. Quest Conference Center will be straight ahead just over pond.

From the West:
