Honoring a Legacy of Leadership: Recognizing Tom Barracato
As we step into 2026, the Opticians Association of Ohio is proud to recognize the contributions of Thomas (Tom) Barracato, a respected leader whose dedication, insight and service have strengthened Opticianry at every level.
Tom has been instrumental in advancing the optical industry through decades of volunteering and professional leadership. His involvement has enhanced numerous associations and organizations, where he has consistently demonstrated a commitment to raising standards, expanding education, and supporting the next generation of Opticians nationwide.
His contributions to OptiCon @ Vision Expo have been especially impactful through his involvement in planning and shaping the educational component. Tom has helped ensure that Opticians nationwide have access to relevant, high quality learning experiences. His ability to anticipate the profession's needs, and guide educational content, has left a lasting impact on the industry.
Tom's leadership began in the 1990's as he served on the Cleveland Society of Dispensing Opticians leading to a Board role at the O.A.O. rising to the Presidents role in 2011. Concurrently, he was rising through the ranks at the O.A.A. Board.
He was elected President in 2013 and continues to volunteer as a Board member to this day on the U.O.A. board. His guidance through this transition reflects a steady vision and a deep understanding of the profession's needs, In addition, Tom has served as Chair of the Opticians Guild of America, as well as Chairman of the American Board of Opticianry and the National Contact Lens Examiners Board. He continues to this day on that board (a tenure of volunteering of over 20 years).
These roles represent only a portion of the impact Tom has made throughout his distinguished career. His professionalism, wisdom, and willingness to serve others have earned him respect across the optical community. He was chosen as the National Academy of Opticianry (NAO) Optician of the Year in 2019. In 2024 Tom was selected as a member of the O.A.O's Opticians Hall of Fame.
Finally, we want to congratulate Tom's achievement in serving on the Ohio Vision Professionals Board for 15 years. At the OVPB, and prior at the Ohio Optical Dispensers Board, Tom has been instrumental in shaping the framework for the laws, statutes and regulations that govern our wonderful world of optics in Ohio. He has played a critical role in establishing policies that protect consumers. His insight, experience, and commitment to public safety laid the foundation for a regulatory structure that strengthens both the profession and the communities we serve.
Thank you, Tom, for your unwavering contributions to the Profession of Opticianry.
